Meet the Herd

WHY HORSES? Horses are loving, loyal, trustworthy... and so much more.

The Nokota horse is a feral and semi-feral horse breed located in the badlands of southwestern North Dakota in the United States. Nokota® horses are descended from the last surviving population of wild horses in North Dakota. For at least a century, the horses inhabited the rugged Little Missouri badlands, located in the southwestern corner of the state. For more information about Nokota horses please visit the Nokota Horse Conservancy.

Cante (chun-tay-Nokota-2021) is the newest member to the herd. She was a bit of a surprise. Her Mother Gimme Three Steps did a little secret canoodling with her father, Warrior Point. She was born on tax day, April 15th 2021 at 3:15am. I had the amazing experience of being there when she was born. She is learning to lead, to stand for the farrier and get loads of scratches and pets from everyone she meets!

Warrior Point (Nokota-2004) Warrior made the journey on Christmas day 2021. Whenever one of my companions crosses over I make every effort to create a safe and loving space for their transition to be as gentle, peaceful, loving and supportive as possible so that the last thing they experience on this earth is love and gentleness. I had the honor of being with him when he took his last breath. He was a kind and honest fellow and he is sorely missed.

Black Wolf-known as Sapa (Nokota-2000) Sapa came to me from the conservancy and was the most ‘wild’ horse and she is still in training and learning to trust people. She is super sensitive and is a great teacher to help clients become more present, slow down and notice what is happening for them in the moment. She is big, beautiful, and very shy.

Gimme Three Steps-known as Gimme (Nokota 2002) Gimme, along with Warrior, also came to me from the conservancy. She is very gentle and the best mom ever! Gimme can be a bit of a challenge to catch, but once you have her, just as sweet as can be. She is striking to look at with her unusual piebald coloring.

Magpie (Nokota-2007) Magpie came to me from a lovely lady in New Mexico that was looking for a forever home for her. Magpie is curious and friendly. She is always the first one to explore something or meet folks at the gate. She is a blue roan and is simply gorgeous! Magpie is also in training as a training level dressage horse.

Bad A**’Molly” Brown (TB/OT-2002). Molly is an off the track race horse was donated to the program by her owner–a veteran who wanted her to work with other veterans. She is the ‘big’ boss with the other horses, but simply a love sponge with people. She loves just hanging out with folks and always wants to be the center of attention!

Antonino-known as Tony (PF/TB-1999) Tony is a Paso Fina and Thoroughbred cross. He was used a hunter jumper back in the day. He is a favorite with clients because of his sweet disposition. I often think of the quote from the Princess Bride movie when I see him…“Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.”

Annie (QT-2000) Sweet Annie was my first horse, she was gifted to me and I never looked back! She is the inspiration for the whole journey into equine assisted mental health and Medicine Horse. She is brave and will boldly go where ever I want to lead her. She taught me so much about being present, patient and showing up in the moment.
